Siobhan’s questions

Which book would you die to get your hands on?

Patrick Rothfuss looks like how I imagined authors as a child

Like not yet released book? The third of the kingkiller trilogy by Patrick Rothfuss. It’s been seven years this far and I’m not sure the third book exists yet, but I’m also of the very controversial opinion that we as readers aren’t to harass or complain about when the next book will come out, because that’s just really shitty done and unproductive in situations like this. I am very excited for it though, as it’s my favourite fantasy series.

What is your new favourite book character?

I just realized of all the books I’ve read this year, I haven’t liked any character more than average. The plots have been good, but I really miss good characters

For whatever reason, what upcoming book are you afraid to read?

The third book in the kingkiller chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, again. But also “Again, but better” by Christine Riccio because I like Christine as a youtuber, and have watched some of her progress through her writing videos. But I haven’t actually read anything by her, which I have from Savannah Brown which is also coming out with a debut novel. And the reviews I’ve skimmed through (trying not to get spoiled) haven’t been great?

What reading trait do you wish to break? Why?

I don’t have any. I did find it really frustrating that I can’t read fiction, or especially non-fiction really, when I know I had school work or studying to do (which is most times). But I can’t change that because I found out it’s because – like me binging tv series – if I come across a good book I’m not able to put it down. My brain can suddenly decide to live in the story or get obsessed with an idea from the story that applies to real life, and then it’s over for being productive in other ways. So when I do read I read a couple books in a couple more relaxing days, when I’ve got time for it.

What is your guilty pleasure read?

Fanfictions when I was younger, I guess? I don’t read that much fanfiction anymore, because I haven’t found or been looking for good ones. I have a character type that I feel a bit guilty about liking – the mysterious (usually) guy who has a bit of anger issues and is also really good at fighting, with some complex background, and a strange moral sense (aka doesn’t care about most of the world).

Which literary world would you love to visit?

As a kid I always wanted to be a part of Percy Jackson’s Half-Blood Camp, especially in the earlier books, when people were learning to fight and being good friends, along with greek gods existing (and alluding that other types of gods existed).

Is there an upcoming or a recent post you are or were afraid of posting?

Yes! There’s this post that I delayed twice right after each other. The first time because it was just hastily written. Currently it’s named “Kids should read more than young adult books”. I mostly hesitated because the post started out as one thing and turned into another, which the rewrite made better, but it’s still too long. As I write this I just published the post, but it’s already gotten less likes than I regularly get, so I don’t think it’s going to do very well.

If you could save any fictional character, who would it be?

Kaladin in “The Stormlight Archive” by Brandon Sanderson. He definitely wasn’t the type I was thinking of when describing guilty pleasure character, but he certainly fits. This guy has gone through the worst I’ve ever seen a single character go through in a book/series. He loses himself sometimes, he loses so many others, he’s tossed around in people’s struggle for power, but he also gets back on his feet every time and saves those lives he can in brilliant ways. Please let him survive all this with some sanity left, Sanderson.

What is the longest reading slump you’ve ever been in?

The biggest period of time I didn’t read at all was before and during this summer, as I was unable to because I grew really ill, and it was made more frustrating as you have a lot of downtime in hospitals. A month and a half went by without me reading, according to goodreads.

Which book do you think people should read immediately?

I go down to the shore in the morning
and depending on the hour the waves
are rolling in or moving out,
and I say, oh, I am miserable,
what shall—
what should I do? And the sea says
in its lovely voice:
Excuse me, I have work to do.”

Mary Oliver, A Thousand Mornings

A Thousand Mornings” by Mary Oliver. It was the book that made me fall in love with poetry for real, it’s easy to read unlike what many thinks of as poetry. I usually pitch it to friends like “subtly critizing society and people through beautiful and life-like descriptions of nature and our connection to it”. Mary Oliver just died, 83 years old, having been a widow since her wife passed away and I teared up the moment I heard (which was a surprise to everyone around me). One of my favourite all time writers.

Which is your favourite female villain?

I’ve been struggling with finding one in novels. If we go the tv route it’s Azula in Avatar: the last airbender.

My questions

  1. Which book would you recommend people to read immediately?
  2. What keeps you blogging?
  3. An upcoming release you’re very excited about
  4. Do you like to write and if so, why? (Doesn’t have to be writing as in a big project like a novel)
  5. What’s your favourite genre and why?
  6. What is a book in your favourite genre that you haven’t seen getting enough love lately?
  7. One character trope you like and one you hate
  8. How many books is on your TBR list and do you wish it was fewer?
  9. What kinds of books were you reading as a 12 year old?
  10. Recommend me some of the blogs you follow!

The Television Tag

Siobhan at Siobhan’s Novelties tagged me, thank you! I’m currently at a really cute cabin hanging out with my friends who all are too good at karaoke (I can honestly not compete with this) and having a great time.

Favourite Shows?

I’m here for this, the whole list is already on my phone.

  • MR ROBOT!!!
  • Orphan Black
  • American gods
  • Hannibal?? I’ve talked a lot about it to people recently as something I would never recommend anyone to watch, but I do like it too much.
  • How to get away with murder
  • Jessica Jones
  • Daredevil season 3
  • Sense8

Favourite Genre?

I guess it’s fantasy-ish stuff, I like everything with like genuinely good fight scenes, to the point where I might skim through the plot if it’s boring enough (cough, most superhero stuff). I do also really like the psychological thriller/drama tv series though, but it’s harder to find good ones.

Least Favourite Show

Siobhan had harsh words for 90 Days Fiance and I completely agree. with her, it’s awful.

But – here’s a more controversial one. I really hate Friends. My bestfriend and dad was both loving watching it, I couldn’t get away and I just don’t find it remotely interesting or funny. I’ve tried so hard, believe me.

Most Re-Watched Show/Favourite Show to Binge Watch?

The first season of Orphan Black! I’ve made the bestfriend (and dad) mentioned above watch it, sitting through the season with them and it’s so satisfying and just so much details you don’t get the first time watching it.

I haven’t watched the last episodes yet. Like I’ve been on S5 E7 for so many months, I just can’t bring myself to watch the last four episodes.

Do You Prefer Watching Things Week-by-Week or Binge-Watching?

Binge-watching. I know that when I start a season of a tv series, if it’s a good one, I’m going to be too drawn in and have no choice. So I don’t usually watch too much Netflix, and no TV at all. Just that one weekend when I’ve finished all important tests and deserve it. Hah, there’s been a couple mistakes of course.

Favourite Television Characters?

Jessica Jones, I just love her so much. My biggest pet peeve is when tv series or movies have the characters with the perfect morning/night routines, no matter how much shit is going down. From the moment I saw Jessica Jones just roll out of bed, and go to track down bad guys I was like YESS.

Bilderesultat for jessica jones gif shithead

Favourite Television Ships?

I don’t usually ship people that hard?

Show You Could Never Get Into?

Many. Friends, of course. The vampire diaries, even though I loved vampire books at the time.

Show You Fell Out of Love with?

Every single one that have more than four seasons, including the beloved Orphan Black.

Cancelled Too Soon?

THEY AREN’T RENEWING THE PUNISHER FOR A THIRD SEASON. WTF IS WRONG WITH THEM. Did they see even see Giorgia Whigham as Amy? And the punisher’s fun banter with her? AAHH.

Guilty Pleasure Show?

Like the shows finding the wedding dresses, we’re all critiquing the shit out of that like we know anything about fashion. (I really like couture fashion shows in general though, like that new Paolo Sebastian show for SS19? Watched it three times, excellent.)

What Are You Currently Watching?

Nothing, because I haven’t had time. See binging problem.

I Tag

This tag was so much fun, but I feel I’ve just tagged people in other things. So if you want to do it, feel free to link to me so I see it!

Harry Potter Book Tag

I do not remember where I first saw this book tag, I’ve had it saved as a post idea for a while, but you’re welcome to do it if you want to! The Harry Potter Book Tag was created by Trang and Lashaan at Bookidote

A book you found the theme interesting, but you’d like to rewrite it.

This is most books I don’t like, because they usually had something special in their synopsis that made me read them.

The first book in a series that got you hooked.

A Living Nightmare by Darren Shan is the first book of a series called Cirque du Freak and absolutely got me hooked not only that series and the more gruesome Demonata series, but vampires, monsters and demons in general as a (way too young haha) kid. People ask me if X book is appropriate for their eight year old? I’m like “YES and also I’m not the right person to ask because I mostly say no to only game of thrones and lord of the rings (for different reasons)”

A book you wish you could have right now.

Like every collector’s edition. Six of crows collectors edition is even cheap, but I can’t bring myself to buy it because I move next year for uni and what then? I don’t need books that I’ve already read? But I want them all, so badly. A dedicated library is my dream in whatever apartment or house I live in as a “real adult”.

A killer book. Both senses. Take it as you like.

I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga.

A book that you found really confusing.

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. I knew I liked it, but I didn’t understand it at once. I still don’t get all of it after one read through, but firstly I know who Kafka is now. I expect a tiny applause and lots of gasps at that, I know it’s weird. Murakami answered 1200 questions about it allegedly and I’m going to delve into it after some more readthroughs once because:

In an interview posted on his English language website, Murakami says that the secret to understanding the novel lies in reading it several times: “Kafka on the Shorecontains several riddles, but there aren’t any solutions provided. Instead, several of these riddles combine, and through their interaction the possibility of a solution takes shape. And the form this solution takes will be different for each reader. To put it another way, the riddles function as part of the solution. It’s hard to explain, but that’s the kind of novel I set out to write”.

A dark twisted book.

The tv series “You” on netflix. Book-wise is harder. The torture and physical and psychological conditions Kaladin is put under in The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson really struck me as so amazingly written and utterly terrifying because it’s such a cruel play on having to work together as a team, but everyone dying before trust can be built.

Your spirit animal book.

I don’t know what this means, but the answer is “Graceling” by Kristin Cashore. I need to reread it and review it as an adult, but it was so precious to me growing up. Katsa is a really fierce, violent warrior who has emotions, but doesn’t let any hardships she’s put through stop her. I love her so much and would carry her in my mind like she could give me strength.

A book that surprised you in a great way, reveals more than it is

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins seems like such an average title, cover and synopsis, but it went freaking MAD. It built up forever, both the world and the character with their interactions, and then ascended in chaos as worlds were torn down and Gods missing and the main character isn’t as unassuming as she’s been the whole book. It’s one of those books that sticks in your mind afterwards and has become one of my favourite, but I can’t promote it to people without SPOILING THE WHOLE DAMN THING. It’s just plot-twists!! But they’re not really plot-twists, they’re just a twisted plot. Led by twisted characters? I love it and I think a lot more would as well, if they picked it up.

The Sunshine Blogger Award

I was tagged for The Sunshine Blogger Award some time ago by Lori @ Betwined reads. And then by Leslie @ Books are the new black. Thank you to you both!

First Lori’s questions:

1) Which fictional character do you think best represents you?

Oh no, difficult start. I don’t think I’ve found one yet. Which is strange considering how many brown-haired introverted nerdy girls who love reading and writing there are in books, almost like the authors often write someone similiar to themselves. Honestly I would be the supportive side character friend that always gives out advice, and you sometimes see them going on with their outside of the plot. I’m very critical, but all characters that has that trait also seem to have too much cynism, where I constantly shift between “let it burn” and weird optimism.

2) What book do you most regret ever having bought?

I’m not sure there’s any- CURSED CHILD. Holy fuck why does that book exist (the reason is money and wanting to keep relevancy).

3) If you watch BookTube, who are some of your favorite creators?

Ariel Bissett was the first booktuber I liked and I’ve watched her a couple years because she has a similiar taste in books as me, but she’s also been a couple years and steps ahead of me in what kind of books she’s interested in. Like she broadened her reading from mainly young adult books and I was like “but why?” and not long after I felt like doing the same.

4) Who gave you your love of reading?

Not who, but what – Libraries. Started liking books in literally kindergarten because there was a book bus visiting us that had so many varied books. In school we had a little library and when I grew out of the fantasy section there, I fell in love with the big library in the city. And I miss it dearly after moving away.

5) Do you prefer in-person or online book clubs?

Would prefer in-person, but I talk so much about books online because there’s never been anyone of my close friends that’s as much into books.

6) How do you organize your upcoming blog posts?

I mainly post reviews, which then depends on which books I want to read and how many and schedule them. I’ve played around with the days I want to be posting and still haven’t figured that out. I do the top ten tuesday if I like the theme, so tuesday. Want to keep it to thursday and friday/saturday. I recently added some other “regular” posts, like quote of the week (because I really like searching for good quotes and have collected a lot of them) and a semi-weekly update because I wasn’t writing enough about books as I was reading them.

7) What do you think of fans who write angry letters/direct messages to an author?

I’m not really up to speed on how much this happens, if the question is about a certain author or problem. In general be a nice person, harassment is not okay. If something happens to your fav ficitional character that you just don’t like, write fanfic or something, don’t attack the author. The author has created something though, and if they’re a public person, it should be allowed to give opinions on that.

8) How would you try to convert an non-reader into a reader?

As a teen my classmate said she wanted to be a reader, but didn’t know how. She was actually being serious about it and came back after I recommended some young adult love story, it might’ve been Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. I wouldn’t go for that now, but the most important thing is to ask what they would like to read about and think of popular books in that genre. I wouldn’t recommend my fav books – like any of Brandon Sanderson’s – because they require more effort to get into.

I did also read my little brother Harry Potter from he was like four years old as a bedtime story and he still didn’t become a reader, so I’m not to be trusted on this one.

9) If you could frame one book cover and hang it up in your house, which cover would it be?

2af830f2-83b9-49f4-b83d-ecf8b9bb4540

This book is stunning. And I haven’t read anything by Emily Bronte, I bought it solely because of how this 200th annivarsary edition is so perfect looking. I want to embroid it and hang it up, seriously.

10) Which fictional character do you love that you think would be horrible in real life?

Most of them, I feel it would be a “never meet your heroes” kind of moment. Usually you get to see so much into character’s thought processes and some of the people I find horrible in real life I would surely like better if I could get that much insight of reasoning behind actions and behaviors. I’m taking these questions too seriously, oops.

11) What’s one of your favorite blog posts that you would like to receive a little more love?

Like every review, because I want to just discuss books and if someone mails me pointing out details they loved or hated, I’m completely in for it. My review of Space Opera by Catherynne M Valente is kind of messy and rambly, but so was the book and I really liked to pour out my thoughts on it.

And Leslie’s questions:

1) If you have an e-reader, do you have a cover?

Slytherin forever? This gorgeous kindle cover is from Klevercase.co.uk and shipped internationally. It’s amazing, except for being really difficult to remove (at least without breaking it).

CVVA0500.JPG

2) What was in your last book haul?

I’ve only published one book haul post, but I just got and read “An absolutely remarkable thing” (review coming soon) AND IT WAS SO GREAT

3) What’s your favorite number?

I’m a hp and fantasy fan, obviously it’s seven.

4) Best book to movie adaptation, in your opinion?

There’s so many bad ones. I liked “The Hobbit” I guess, but more so that they’ve come to a level of fame, talent and money to make it so grand and I just love seeing dragons flying.

5) Your favorite food?

Pie.

6) Something you learned in 2018?

In fiction and telling stories about real life, people like to say things like “and that’s when I hit the bottom and …” about our lives. It’s not given that you hit The Rock Bottom though, where your mentality change and you start digging yourself up. It might be a row of horrible things, decisions or circumstances happening over time and constantly digging to not suffocate. Here’s my pessimistic side coming in, told you earlier.

7) Best bookstore you’ve visited

I have so many I want to visit, but no good ones I’ve actually visited.

8) Are you usually early or late?

Early, because anxious mess. Late is I have to count on the damn bus.

9) If you were given 1 wish today, what would you wish for?

I can’t take these questions not seriously, no matter how hard I try. Are we talking genie-wish? I would wish for cure to autoimmune diseases, because there’s a lot of them and they suck and are difficult to treat. Sponsing cancer research is great people, but so few have heard of autoimmune diseases and there’s soo many.

10) Best book you read/discovered this year?

rs

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman.

11) Share a funny or sweet moment you had this week!

Good way to finish this long post! I have autumn vacation this week and have spent time with my little (teenage) brother and we’ve laughed a lot together. Everyday is sometimes very busy and we don’t get much quality time, so it’s been fun to realize again how like himself he still is, while also starting to mature.

Here’s the questions I want to ask:

  1. Which fictional character would you like most to be real?
  2. Where would you go and what would you do if you had an endless budget for a vacation?
  3. What do you honestly like most about blogging?
  4. Which book was disappointing recently and why?
  5. If you were magically given the choice of one thing you would succeed at, no matter what, what would you choose?
  6. When do you stop and DNF a book? Do you give it a set number of pages or just based on feeling?
  7. What’s a genre or type of book you want to read more of?
  8. What’s your top three favourite books of the last year?
  9. Do you write?
  10. What’s one book you love to recommend to people?
  11. What’s a book cover you would frame and hang on your wall?

WWW Wednesday, 21. February 2018

It’s the middle of winter vacation and I finally have more times on my hand to read and relax! This is my first time participating in WWW Wednesday by answering these weekly three questions. If you would like to know more, it’s hosted by Taking on a World of Words.

What did you recently finish reading?

sf.jpg

“Silence Fallen” by Patricia Briggs, the 10th (what!) book in the Mercy Thompson series. I’m mostly reading it out of nostalgia now, but the plot was pretty based on nostalgia as well. Book review out soon!

What are you currently reading?

ab

Too many books at once. “We have no idea” by Jorge Cham, a science book, just started the steampunk fantasy book “Airborn” by Kenneth Opel which seems promising and “Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale”, the spanish version of the first Harry Potter book. I hope to read a couple chapters of it each week for the near future. I’m only able to read multiple books at once if they’re very different genres.

What do you think you’ll read next?

wor

I’m horrible at prediciting, more often than not I will rebel against myself and end up reading something entirely different.

I really want to read “The words of radiance” by Brandon Sanderson soon, but we’ll see. It’s a big book that I have trouble putting down, so I’ll need to have my weekend open so I can, as I have with most other Sanderson books, read it long into the night.
